Aussie Sevens team to use Darwin as base

Darwin will play host to a world rugby sevens series qualifying tournament in October which will also feature Australia's Commonwealth Games team.

Michael O'Connor's national side will use the three-day tournament as a lead-in event before the Delhi Games and also spend 10 days in Darwin as preparation.

It could provide the first glimpse of Wallabies players in sevens competition with coach O'Connor able to call up Test players before their spring tour of Europe.

Matt Giteau, Digby Ioane, James O'Connor and David Pocock are among the leading players O'Connor will consider picking in his squad of rising youngsters and sevens specialists.

Nine nations have been confirmed for the FORU (Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions) qualification tournament from October 1-3 at Darwin's AUSTAR Rugby Park.

The successful sides will earn the right to compete at one of the Hong Kong, Wellington and Adelaide events on the next Sevens World Series.
