Cats and Pies could boost firepower

AFL powerhouses Collingwood and Geelong could load up with even more firepower this week in time for Friday night's blockbuster at the MCG.

The Magpies and Cats, both red-hot and scoring with ease, could both regain a forward and a midfielder from injury ahead of their top-of-the-table clash.

The Cats expect to regain full-forward James Podsiadly, who had enjoyed a remarkable start to the season with 17 goals in his first five games after he was elevated from the rookie list at age 28.

Podsiadly missed Saturday night's thumping of the Brisbane Lions because of groin soreness, but Geelong football operations general manager Neil Balme said he was a good chance to return.

"We're expecting so, but we won't know until tomorrow when we do the injury assessment," Balme said.

Midfielder James Kelly could also come into calculations after he withdrew before Saturday night's game through a calf injury, but fellow onballer Joel Corey (knee) is still another week away at least from a return.

The Magpies will this week monitor the fitness of forward Paul Medhurst, who hurt his foot in training last week and missed Friday night's win over Fremantle.

Winger Sharrod Wellingham, who was in great form until he injured a calf muscle in round six, could also return.

Collingwood will test both players later in the week.

Geelong and Collingwood are the two highest-scoring teams in the league and have posted some big wins in recent rounds, which has them both well clear in percentage of the other 14 sides.

After they were beaten by Carlton in round five the Cats thrashed Richmond (108 points), Sydney (67) and the Lions (81), while the Magpies boast an average winning margin of 57 points from their past five wins.

The AFL announced on Monday ticket sales for the game were selling "extremely strongly".

The big lead-up to the game has prompted the Seven Network to make the rare decision to televise the game live in Melbourne.
