NRL referees getting their eyes checked

Manly coach Des Hasler and numerous spectators over many years have had their way, with NRL referees having their eyes checked.

The checks came as part of a new sponsorship under which eye care provider OPSM will appear on the sleeve of referees jerseys in NRL and representative matches.

Hasler was the latest coach to suggest such action following his team's loss to Parramatta in March.

"I'll personally pay for those two touchies to visit OPSM and get a check-up because I didn't know we'd reverted to gridiron," fumed Hasler at the time.

The good news is that all the whistleblowers passed their checks, according to NRL chief executive David Gallop.

"Importantly, the NRL referees have gone about this partnership in the right spirit and, for the record, the eyesight of the squad came through with flying colours," said Gallop.

"But all the referees recognise the role the sponsorship can play in urging all Australians to look after their eyes and to undergo testing every two years."
