Police boost presence at Polokwane

Police boosted their presence at Peter Mokaba Stadium amid concerns that stadium security guards might join colleagues at other World Cup venues who went on strike this week following payment rows with their contractors.

"We definitely have a Plan B at hand if there would be a strike," Limpopo police spokesman Col. Motlafela Mojapelo said.

He said police were prepared to take control of security if needed for the tournament's last two matches at the stadium next week.

Police have taken responsibility for stadium security at venues in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth since stewards began protests Sunday night.

Mojapelo said police presence in and around the Polokwane stadium will be "definitely at a higher level" for the remaining games, but that he was not allowed to give exact figures.

"We will have more police officers deployed at the stadium as well as at the Fan Fest and in the city centre," said Mojapelo, who called it "a precautionary measure" for the rest of the tournament.

The Peter Mokaba Stadium will host the final Group B match between Greece and Argentina on Tuesday, followed by the closing Group F game between Paraguay and New Zealand two days later.

Mojapelo said he discussed matters with the management of the Fidelity Guards company, who is in charge of security at the Polokwane stadium.

"So far, nothing has happened," Mojapelo said. "But we have sufficient reserve forces on standby and we are well prepared for any eventuality."

Local organisers said they did not share the police's concerns.

Ndavhe Ramakuela, head of the local World Cup organising committee, said security at the stadium "remains our top priority" but that extra police forces were unnecessary.

"No major incidents have been reported so far and we are happy with the way the stewards are doing their work," said Ramakuela. "There were no problems in or around the stadium so I believe we don't need additional policemen around."

Ramakuela said he has "no indication at all" that security guards in Polokwane were to follow protesters from other venues.
