Great expectations within Trengove

Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove says he feels more pressure meeting his own high expectations rather than those outside his club as a high AFL draft pick.

The No.2 choice in last year's national draft has played 13 of a possible 14 games in his debut season and admitted on Tuesday the campaign had been draining on body and mind.

But he felt he had not been bogged down by the weight of expectation from Demons supporters, and instead was trying to fulfil is own standards every week.

"There's always expectation of a new kid coming into a club in the AFL and I suppose I've been lucky to have played a few games early on and get a bit of experience," Trengove said.

"I haven't felt the pressure too much, but you always put pressure on yourself going out each week because you want to perform. There's always going to be pressure around."

Asked if he had met his won expectations, Trengove said: "Um, I suppose so.

"I'm always trying to get better each week and my expectations are going up each week, so I'm doing everything I can to try to meet them.

"Some weeks I do, some weeks I don't."

Trengove, 18, said he had found the season draining at times, although he felt physically and mentally refreshed with eight rounds to go.

After a bright start this season the Demons have slumped to 14th following four defeats and a draw from their past five games, but could climb several rungs if they beat Essendon (12th), who were walloped by Adelaide last weekend.

Trengove said the Demons could draw confidence from a gallant effort against in-form St Kilda, as they matched the Saints for three quarters last Sunday before being overrun.

"You learn a lot from those sort of games because we showed that we can go with them for the majority of the game and you learn a lot playing on the better players," he said.

"Us young boys really got a lot out of that.

"Coming up against teams in the future we know that we've got the potential to match it with them, so hopefully that will hold us in good stead."
