FIFA still to name trophy presenter

FIFA has not yet decided who will present the World Cup trophy to the winning captain on Sunday.

Former South Africa president Nelson Mandela is likely to perform the honour if the 91-year-old anti-apartheid icon is well enough to attend the match at Soccer City, but FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot said on Wednesday there is "no information on this so far."

Mandela's foundation released a brief statement later Wednesday acknowledging an invitation from FIFA.

"We note FIFA's open invitation to Mr Nelson Mandela to attend the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup," the statement read from Achmat Dangor, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

"We reiterate that Mr Mandela and his family will make the decision about whether he attends or not on the day."

Maingot said the decision on who hands over the trophy belongs to FIFA's World Cup organising committee.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro received the 2006 trophy in Berlin from Lennart Johansson, who was then president of UEFA.
