Lions defensive trio on Riewoldt alert

Brisbane full back Daniel Merrett and his defensive deputies Joel Patfull and Brent Staker are on Nick Riewoldt alert for Saturday night's AFL clash with St Kilda.

Brisbane coach Michael Voss predicted the trio would each take turns at minding Riewoldt, who is playing his first match after an 11-week absence because of a hamstring injury.

When and who is assigned to mind the Saints' skipper at the Gabba will depend largely on how St Kilda coach Ross Lyon chooses to deploy his skipper.

"We have to make sure we don't make life easy for him," Voss said.

"I'm sure he's looking forward to it and he'll be like a rabbit running around out there.

"I'm sure he will play some tome deep too.

"It means that Rog (Daniel Merrett) may have to take him, if he's a bit higher then Joel Patfull or Staker may get that at the same time.

"I don't think it will be one particular player you will see beside him the whole time."

Riewoldt's return will be closely monitored by the Saints, given he has not played for three months and he's looking to find form fairly quickly.

Brisbane has its form queries with Voss admitting key forward Brendan Fevola is fit, but is unsure if he has regained his expert touch.

Fevola returns after missing one game because of injury although before his groin complaint, Fev was facing the axe after a lamentable 200th match against Richmond.

"I'm not convinced he's (Fevola) in form, he hasn't played since," Voss said.

"He's trained really well, he's up and flying and he has had a really good week on the track.

"He's had a week and a half of to be able to do that and if anything it's freshened him up.

"As to when he is back in form, well, I know when he is up and training and he's moving around with the group, he certainly has a better chance of doing that so he comes in well prepared."

The Saint's encounter is the start of a horror three week stretch for the Lions who have Hawthorn and Geelong to follow.
