Lockyer could keep playing beyond 2012

Revelations that Darren Lockyer is likely to play on until 2012 have been topped by suggestions within the Broncos that the five-eighth could battle on for longer still, possibly even compiling a record 20 NRL seasons.

Six footballers have continued in the NRL beyond the age of 36, most notably Manly great Cliff Lyons who was 37 when still playing for Manly in 1999.

Lockyer, 33, who'll equal Lyons' record of 332 games against former coach Wayne Bennett and the Dragons on Sunday, has confirmed 2012 is now on the cards.

That would extend his career with Brisbane into an 18th season.

But sources within the club suggested it may not end there.

"Locky's training is as good, if not better, than it has been for several years," the club source said.

"He struggled for quite a while with issues after he had knee reconstruction surgery but this season he's pain free and fitter than he has been in years.

"He's a committed trainer and I certainly wouldn't rule out another two or three seasons provided he still has the desire and drive to keep going."

His latest two year deal with Brisbane expires at the end of 2011 and while he hasn't spoken to the club about another deal, he feels his mind and body could cope with playing in 2012.

"I'm more worried about getting the two points this week ... I've had a few milestones come my way recently which have been great but my focus really is on the team's performance on Sunday," said Lockyer on Thursday.

"I feel great right now. I was asked about 2012 and I said I was keen to be part of it.

"It doesn't mean I've signed a contract for that year.

"I wasn't seriously going to think about it (2012) until next year but I was asked the question and I answered it honestly."

The way Lockyer is playing, 2012 would seem well within his scope.

"I'm still enjoying it. I love being involved and I'm keen to be involved beyond next year," he said.

"But don't forget how old I am and how many games I've played."
