Goodes says interchange cap 'silly'

Sydney co-captain Adam Goodes says the AFL would be "silly" if it capped the number of interchanges allowed per game.

The dual Brownlow Medallist has warned the AFL that the players' association strongly opposes the concept.

Next month the AFL's laws of the game committee plans to meet to discuss the issue, and the league has indicated a cap of 100 interchanges per game would slow the game and reduce injuries.

Teams average about 115 interchanges per game this season, but Hawthorn made 156 player swaps during their draw with St Kilda last Friday night.

"The way the game's going, it would be a very silly decision," Goodes told reporters at the SCG on Friday.

"I know being part of the players' association, it would be something we would be heavily against, just from a player welfare point of view.

"I'm happy for them to talk about it but when the decision gets to be made I'm sure that us as players will sit down as a group and really voice our opinion about what should happen."

Opinion among coaches has been divided, with Collingwood mentor Mick Malthouse saying the league is determined to impose some form of cap on interchange numbers, despite club feedback.

"That's Micky Malthouse's opinion as a coach," Goodes said.

"I'd hate to see it happen, a cap being put in.

"Whether or not it happens, we'll talk about it when that happens.

"As a player, it's definitely not an issue that's right on our plate at the moment with five weeks out from finals.

"We're really keen on getting as many wins as we can and that's the most important thing at this point of the season, staying fit and pushing to win as many games as you can for the finals."
