Port pip Eagles by one point

A snapped David Rodan point in the last minute has given Port Adelaide a one-point victory over West Coast in their AFL match on Saturday night.

The Power survived a late West Coast surge to prevail 8.13 (61) to 8.12 (60) before their lowest-ever crowd at AAMI Stadium.

The bottom-placed Eagles moved closer to collecting their first wooden spoon, despite squaring scores with a minute to go.

Rodan then decisively rushed a quick right-footer through for a point in the final 30 seconds to seal Port's win.

The low crowd of 14,113 reflected a low standard match, with strong winds, dew and skill errors troubling both sides.

Port's small forwards Cameron Hitchcock and Brett Ebert each booted two goals, while eight-game Eagle Andrew Strijk impressed in his three-goal display.

Power midfielder Travis Boak was brilliant in gathering 29 disposals while his onball colleagues Kane Cornes (38 touches) and Dom Cassisi (28 possessions, 14 tackles) helped overwhelm the Eagles.

While ugly and ultimately fortunate, the triumph is priceless for Matthew Primus' bid to coach Port next year and beyond - the caretaker coach's third win from five games since Mark Williams' exit.

Primus' charges thought they had broken the game open with a decisive four-goal burst in the third quarter.

The productive patch contrasted stagnant scoring in the rest of Eagle ruckman Dean Cox's 200th match.

Cox was prominent but the Eagles couldn't manage a goal until 10 minutes into the second term.

The 13th-placed Power were only marginally better, with turnovers restricting their halftime lead to just six points, 3.6 to 2.6.

The ball-hunting of Boak and Cassisi in particular then drove Port's third term purple patch and ensured a 17-point lead at three quarter-time.

But their handy buffer was rapidly reduced to nothing as West Coast kicked four consecutive goals to square the scores with 60 seconds remaining.

The Eagles' stunning late flurry lodged as many goals in 13 minutes as they kicked in the remainder of the match.

Port Adelaide's caretaker coach Matthew Primus was relieved to "win ugly".

"It won't go down as one of the greatest games ever played but West Coast came to play a tough, low scoring affair," Primus said.

"It wasn't a great game but they stuck at it.

"A few players had their moments and then just drifted out of the game and that allowed West Coast to be get back in."

Eagles coach John Worsfold praised his side's last quarter fightback.

"To give themselves a chance to win the game was courageous," Worsfold said.

Eagle Koby Stevens was reported for making high contact with Port's Danny Meyer in the second quarter, while his teammates Adam Selwood and Brad Sheppard both injured shoulders and are doubtful for next Sunday's home match against North Melbourne.

The Power host Melbourne, also on Sunday.
