Storm too classy for Sharks

Melbourne have made it clear they can't wait for their NRL season from hell to finish and you can bet Cronulla feel much the same.

The Storm continued Cronulla's misery with a convincing 24-4 victory at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

As 14th played the wooden-spooners, with the Storm unable to accrue any points this season due to salary-cap rorting, the match attracted Melbourne's smallest crowd of the year just 8902 turning out.

Still, with pride on the line, both teams toiled hard although Melbourne showed, with or without competition points, they were a cut above the Sharks.

The Storm scored four tries, with tireless skipper Cameron Smith the only player to get across the line in the opening half, with his side taking a 6-0 lead into the break.

Departing centre Greg Inglis, who will play with Brisbane next season, set up his team's second try as he stood up the defence and then got a pass away behind the back of the tackler to winger Dane Nielsen.

Second-rower Sika Manu, playing in the centres after the late withdrawal of winger Matt Duffie, then boosted the score-line to 18-0, with his effort in the 56th minute and it was effectively game over.

The visitors had a try disallowed when video referee Chris Ward ruled Blake Ferguson knocked on as he tried to take an intercept, although they were rewarded minutes later when fellow winger Luke Covell crossed on the other side of the park.

But there was little else for the Sharks to celebrate, with Ryan Hinchcliffe adding to their woes with a 73rd-minute try.

The Sharks, who beat the Sydney Roosters last week, were searching for their first back-to-back wins since round 15 last year but failed to add to their miserly tally of just six victories for the season.

While their completion rate was impressive and their defence strong, they looked rudderless in attack.

When asked if he was eager for the season to end, Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan replied: "I probably do at the moment."

"We were OK in the first half and there was some desperate defence on the tryline.

"I was quite happy to go in at 6-0 down but I just thought in the second half there was two tough decisions there and we just couldn't handle them.

"Defending our tryline against the Inglises and the Slaters, it was just too hard and we just haven't got the attack at the moment to come back at them."

He said his men intended to lift for their last home game next week against the Titans to ensure veteran skipper Trent Barrett and Covell were sent off into retirement on a bright note.

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy praised the work of new faces in the line-up such as under 20s halfback Luke Kelly, who took over at five-eighth as Brett Finch was rested.

"He did a real good job, I thought his defence was outstanding," Bellamy said.

The win was the Storm's 13th of the season, on par with the second-placed Panthers.

Bellamy said he wasn't interested in "what could have been".

"Everyone keeps telling us where we'd be but at the end of the day it doesn't mean anything and I don't particularly want to know," he said.
