Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna has appointed his former West Coast team-mate Andy Lovell as one of his assistants for the Suns' inaugural AFL season.

Lovell, who played alongside McKenna at the Eagles in the nineties, joins Shane O'Bree, Ken Hinkley, Shaun Hart and Dean Solomon on the Suns' coaching panel.

Before Tuesday's announcement, Lovell had been St Kilda's development coach and coach of their VFL affiliate team Sandringham Zebras for the past three years.

He's also a former assistant coach of the Eagles (1999) and Geelong (2005-06).

Lovell played 121 senior games with Melbourne (1988-95) and 43 senior games with West Coast (1996-98).
