Brisbane players and officials have been told to post "In China" on social media sites before they leave for the AFL's exhibition match against Melbourne in Shanghai on Sunday.

The Lions distributed an itinerary for their tour explaining strict social media restrictions in China would prevent players tweeting and updating Facebook.

Players and officials have also been warned hotels have an additional internet filter and not to bother spending hours trying to set up a proxy server to circumnavigate the restrictions.

"You should post 'In China'. Your friends will understand," the instructions read.

A Melbourne spokeswoman said the club would be conducting tests this week to determine if there was likely to be any communication issues ahead of the ground breaking exhibition game at Jiangwan Sports Centre.

AFL media relationship manager Patrick Keane said he did not envisage any dramas.
