Hawks make sweeping list changes

Carl Peterson and Wayde Skipper were two notable casualties as Hawthorn reacted to another disappointing season with a shake-up of their AFL list.

As expected, the Hawks also delisted Travis Tuck, who last month became the first player to be suspended for recording a third strike under the league's illicit drugs policy.

But the Hawks are following through on their plan to keep a rookie spot open for Tuck until next March.

"We met with Travis recently and he's travelling very well at the moment," said Hawks football manager Mark Evans.

"He's up in the Northern Territory, running football clinics and keeping himself busy.

"Travis will join training when it starts on November 1 and he'll be training all the way through to March - we'll see what happens then."

The 2008 premiers were expected to finish in the top four this season, but a shocking start handicapped their chances and they finished seventh.

Their 11 delistings also included Peterson, who played 17 matches for the Hawks this season, and Skipper, who made 15 senior appearances.

Hawthorn ran out of patience with Peterson, who originally joined them in 2006 and finally made his senior debut this season after he was put on the rookie list last year.

"He's had some coping issues, we've given him a fair amount of support across two years," Evans said.

"He probably hasn't demonstrated the commitment and discipline you need to be an AFL player."

The recruiting of David Hale from North Melbourne and the new interchange rule led to the Hawks delisting Skipper and fellow big man Simon Taylor.

With 85 AFL games, Taylor was the most experienced player to be cut.

A broken leg in the pre-season meant the ruckman only played one senior game this year.

Hawthorn had already announced they were delisting Rhan Hooper, while Beau Dowler and Beau Muston were also axed from the senior list.

Dowler and Muston were high picks in the 2005 national draft, but they had shocking luck with injuries.

Hawthorn lost Campbell Brown to Gold Coast and Trent Croad has officially retired.

Along with Peterson and Skipper, the Hawks' rookie delistings were Jarrod Kayler-Thomson, Garry Moss, Cameron Stokes and NSW scholarship holder Michael Johnston.
