North will use compensation pick

North Melbourne will be the only team to use a compensation pick at next month's AFL draft.

There are nine compensation picks in the system and these are a result of Gold Coast's recruiting concessions.

Each club who lost an uncontracted player to the Suns received a compensation pick.

Geelong received two round-one picks for star midfielder Gary Ablett.

The compensation picks then became key bargaining tools last month during the AFL trade period.

Gold Coast turned the picks into a double-whammy by trading for three of them, which they will warehouse for future drafts.

The picks can be used at any stage until the 2014 draft.

North Melbourne received their end-of-round-one compensation pick in the trade that sent ruckman David Hale to Hawthorn.

The Hawks gave the Kangaroos the compensation pick they received for losing Campbell Brown to Gold Coast.

Friday was the deadline for clubs to tell the AFL whether they would use their picks in next month's draft.

North's compensation pick will come between picks 26 and 27.
