Sandilands plays down DVT fears

Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands is confident he'll still have plenty of leg room despite the AFL's controversial switch from Qantas to Virgin Blue as the league's official carrier.

Leading sports physician Dr Peter Larkins has raised concerns that players could be at an increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis after the AFL's switch to Virgin, which offers less leg room than Qantas in economy and business class.

But Sandilands, who at 211cm is the tallest player in the league, said exit row seats would provide ample room for players to travel comfortably.

"Generally when you get that exit row you get that extra bit of space and are able to walk around the plane," Sandilands said on Wednesday.

"As long as you get those sorts of seats there's no problems.

"I'm confident the AFL will do the right thing and there'll be no issues whatsoever."

Sandilands is back in full training after recovering from the knee injury that hindered his finals campaign last year.

The 28-year-old said he was a chance to play in his side's opening NAB Cup encounters with West Coast and Hawthorn on February 13.

"I'm feeling really good," Sandilands said.

"Now I'm back to full training.

"The knee feels really good.

"I'm starting to get a bit of fitness back so I'm looking forward to the season starting."

Sandilands said he was eyeing more time in the forward line after the recruitment of former Crows ruckman Jonathon Griffin.

"He's training the house down at the moment," Sandilands said of Griffin.

"He's a really good size, a really good runner.

"He's even sidestepping midfielders at the moment, so really happy with the way he's coming along.

"We've got two or three quality big men who can play in the ruck now, so we've got more options.

"We've got Griffo come in now and Zac Clarke's taking big steps, training really well.

"I can see those guys getting a lot of games this year so hopefully I can spend a bit more time forward and those guys can spend a bit of time in the middle."
