Twickenham will not host Crusaders

Britain's Rugby Football Union quashed hopes that London's famous Twickenham stadium could host the Super Rugby match between New Zealand's Crusaders and South Africa's Sharks.

The Christchurch franchise asked the RFU if they could host the March 26 fixture as their own ground is unusable due to damage sustained in last month's devastating earthquake.

Despite their willingness to help, the RFU concluded that it would have to turn down the request for logistical reasons with Twickenham neighbours Harlequins' set for a home game on the same day.

"Given we are keen to help support the people of Christchurch as they recover from the dreadful events of the last few weeks this was something we looked at seriously," an RFU spokesman told Britain's Press Association.

"Unfortunately in the end it has just not proved possible to do this given the operational challenges involved and in particular the transport, policing and security issues that would arise from the clash with the Harlequins' game on the same day less than one mile away.

"We have confirmed this to Crusaders today with regret but have offered other dates later in the Super 15 (Super Rugby) season to continue to offer the hand of rugby friendship to Christchurch and its people," he added.

The Crusaders hosted NSW at their temporary home ground in Nelson last Saturday night and thumped the Waratahs 33-18.

They host another Australian Super Rugby team on Friday night when the struggling Brumbies come to New Zealand's south island.
