Buderus in exile draws on Origin

A - Former NSW skipper Danny Buderus is drawing on his State of Origin experience as he prepares to captain the Exiles side in a UK rep footy experiment.

The 33-year-old Leeds hooker, who made 21 appearances for NSW from 2002-08, was chosen to lead the team of Super League-based Australians and Kiwis in an international "Origin" match against England at Headingley on June 10.

It is a one-off match designed to provide more competitive opposition for Steve McNamara's team than France in the build-up to the Four Nations Series.

But Buderus thinks it could grow along the lines of the State of Origin concept.

"Hopefully it's got some legs and in future years can grow into a three-game series," he said.

"It's got no history so you can't draw on that but you can draw on your origins and to have the two countries together is a powerful thing.

"I'm pretty confident we can put out a competitive team. It will be a short camp but I'm sure we'll be ready to go come game day."

Exiles coach Brian McClennan, the former Leeds and New Zealand boss, and his Australian assistant Terry Matterson have come up with 34 names from the 95 players who qualified under the NRL club-trained rule.

They will select seven more at various stages in the coming weeks while another 13 will come from a fans vote.

The squad will be trimmed to 18 three days before the match.

Apart from skipper Buderus, vice-captain Thomas Leuluai is the only other player so far guaranteed a place.

Huddersfield's former Australian Test second-rower Luke O'Donnell, who thought his representative days were over when he left North Queensland at the end of last season, is also a fan.

"Coming over here, you're not in contention for anything in Australia so it's exciting that we can still be part of a big game over here," he said.

"You can definitely pick a great side from those players."

McNamara was among those calling for fresh opposition following a series of one-sided matches against France, who were generally unable to field a competitive team in mid-season.

"I think the quality of this game will definitely be of the highest standard, which is what we've been asking for," he said.

"It's a very serious stand-alone fixture. It isn't a Harlem Globetrotters type game, it's not a gimmick, it's a very important game in its own right."

McNamara confirmed he will not be seeking the release of his three Australia-based regulars - Sam Burgess (South Sydney), Gareth Ellis (Wests Tigers) and Gareth Widdop (Melbourne).
