Brown stars in Magpies win

This time last year, Collingwood ruck-forward Leigh Brown was trying to break back into the AFL side.

Now the Magpies cult hero wins games off his own boot.

Brown capped a great game with four last-term goals, including a freakish snap, to spark the Magpies as they belted the Western Bulldogs by 48 points in Sunday's MCG twilight match.

Scores were level and the 'Dogs had the momentum when Brown kicked three goals in five minutes to swing the game decisively his team's way.

The third was a left-foot snap on the run at an acute angle that bounced through.

"It was nice - they're always nice when they go through," Brown said of the impressive snap.

"I haven't kicked too many goals this year, so it's nice to hit the scoreboard and it was nice to see it go through.

"It was a nice block from 'Maxy' (captain Nick Maxwell) to get me a bit of space, too - I guess it's a little bit easier on a wet night if you get it in the direction, it skids a bit.

"In saying that, there's a fair bit of luck involved."

A modest man, Brown was having nothing of the suggestion that the snap would have done his team-mates, and noted goalsneaks Nathan Krakouer and Leon Davis, proud.

"I'd never show up those guys," Brown said.

Brown was one of the great stories of Collingwood's premiership last season.

Once he returned to the seniors, the veteran became crucial to Collingwood's structure because of his ability to play a number of roles - ruckman, forward or key defender.

He was already having a solid game before breaking the contest open with his last-term scoring burst.

"It was good, it was nice to get a few touches," Brown said of his last quarter.

"You stick to your game plan and structures for long enough, it will come off."
