Lions lose Beams for season

Good news for injured Brisbane Lions gun Tom Rockliff has been tempered by the loss of Claye Beams for the rest of the AFL season.

Rockliff initially feared he had suffered an Achilles injury when he was subbed off in the third quarter of last round's drought breaking win over North Melbourne.

But he could be back next week after scans revealed a calf strain.

However, the Lions were still left reeling after Beams, 19, was told he had broken his foot on the weekend.

Beams - brother of Collingwood's Dayne - made his AFL debut in 2011, playing five games before succumbing to injury.

"Beams will have surgery this week," Lions physical performance manager Brett Burton told the club's website.

"Surgery of this kind typically has a recovery period of approximately 12 weeks.

"This means that regrettably, Beams will be forced to sit out the remainder of the 2011 season."

But Burton was breathing a sigh of relief over Rockliff.

"Tom's got a grade one calf strain," he said.

"Originally we thought it might be more serious - something like his Achilles.

"But scans he had yesterday revealed that it isn't which is good news.

"He should only be out for one to two weeks."

In other promising news, Ash McGrath is expected back from a hamstring complaint against the Crows at Adelaide on Sunday.

And Drummond was expected back in a month after undergoing more knee surgery.

"Drummo's surgery went really well," Burton said.

"They cleaned up the damage that was there and he's on track for returning in around four weeks."
