Bucketloads of Qld Origin belief: Smith

It's a state of mind, a habit, a trust and Queensland's captain-in-waiting Cameron Smith says the Maroons have bucketloads of it.

It's belief - and Mal Meninga's Maroons have bottled it following five successive State of Origin rugby league series wins.

Queensland have well and truly buried their early hoodoo at Sydney's Olympic stadium, where NSW must win on Wednesday night or face the embarrassment of another series defeat.

ANZ Stadium was a graveyard for Queensland with their first 10 games from 2000 failing to produce a win.

Smith, who made his debut in 2003, admitted Queensland felt haunted when their losing streak hit double figures in 2006.

"You don't count how many games you've won or compare them but, after a while, it (losing) gets into your head," said Smith.

"Every time we'd go down there, we'd think 'geez, it's such a hard place to win, everyone's against us, it's always slippery, it's not like Brisbane'.

"But we went down in '07, played a really good game and won and thought: 'it's just another footy field'.

"It's that belief. Once you have that belief and you start winning, it just keeps rolling on.

"That's the culture we have."

Queensland have won five of their past six games in Sydney since ending their drought.

"When you've won a few Origins, it gives your team confidence. It gives each individual confidence."

It would again be up to the forwards to lay the platform, but Smith said it would be halves Johnathan Thurston and Darren Lockyer who'd provide the touches of class to win the game.

"We're incredibly lucky they've been together for such a long time and have such a strong combination," he said.

"The forwards will have to do the dirty work, but it's the quality of those two guys that makes the difference - just like Lockyer's inside ball to Billy (Slater) in Origin I.

"In tight situations and in the split second those plays are made, those two are the best at it.

"They have the belief. We all do."
