Sharpe still in hunt for Rugby World Cup

Veteran lock Nathan Sharpe's Wallabies plans remain on track despite an ankle injury bringing an end to his record run of Super Rugby matches for the Western Force.

Sharpe, who rolled his right ankle in last week's heartbreaking 24-21 loss to Queensland, will miss Friday night's away clash with the Melbourne Rebels, halting his club-record run of 53 straight matches for the Force.

Scans revealed Sharpe had suffered minor ligament damage.

But the 33-year-old will require just two weeks on the sidelines, freeing him to link up with the Wallabies when they form camp next month ahead of Tests against Samoa, South Africa and New Zealand.

Sharpe has re-established himself as Australia's leading lock since being dumped for a brief period in 2008.

The 200cm Force skipper and Queensland counterpart James Horwill loom as the first-choice lock pairing for the World Cup later this year, with Rob Simmons and Dean Mumm also in contention.

Sharpe's absence for the Force's final game of the season has been compounded by the loss of star back James O'Connor, suspended for one match for a dangerous lifting tackle on Horwill.
