Soward unsure about Origin fitness

Jamie Soward admits he's unsure if he'll be fit to play for NSW in next week's State of Origin decider in Brisbane, despite being cleared of a torn hamstring.

Soward pulled up clutching the back of his leg after scoring a breakaway try in St George Illawarra's 24-6 win over Manly on Monday, but although scans have shown no tear, the five-eighth admits he's no certainty to be fit for the July 6 encounter.

"I had some scans and it has come back pretty positive, there is not a tear there, but it's still pretty sore, I will see how it pulls up in the next couple of days," Soward said on Tuesday.

"I was a bit worried but I finished off the try which was the most important thing, but I got up and it didn't feel right.

"I'd need to be pretty fit by Friday, just so my teammates have the confidence I will be right and the coach does as well ... we will just have to wait and see."

Soward revealed on Monday after the win over the Sea Eagles that he'd been suffering from tendonitis around the hamstring, but said the new injury is in a different part of the muscle.

"The best case scenario is a couple of days off and it comes good, but it is pretty sore at the moment so we will wait and see," he said.

"It is in a new area which is a little concerning, it's on the outside up near my bum, it is not the area where I've had some tendonitis."

Soward said he would have no concerns going into the game with little training behind him but said he'd sit it out if he did not feel the injury had fully healed.

"I'd be confident, I know the game plan and how we want to play, hopefully we don't get to that stage," he said.

"But if I don't get through there is enough blokes who can fill in, Luke Lewis is a great utility, Kurt Gidley ... can slip into five-eighth, the squad Ricky has picked has guys who can play in a lot of positions.

"But I'm not going to risk it if it's 80 or 90 per cent, it's not fair on my teammates who have put all the hard work in to square the series.

"And it's not fair on the Dragons as well if I was to go out there and do more damage."
