NSWRL trial division for juniors a success

A trial run of a weight-restricted competition for junior rugby league players has been hailed a success.

NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) held the weight and age restricted division at the All Schools Carnival in Sydney's west on Wednesday in a bid to address safety concerns about junior players.

All youngsters competing in the under-14 trial division at the annual carnival had to weigh-in at less than 65kg before the match.

Jeremy Kurtz, a NSWRL development officer, said overall the trial was a success.

"It went well, we were pretty happy with it," he told AAP on Wednesday.

"The schools that played all enjoyed it."

Five teams from Sydney's west and north competed in the trial but it was Ashcroft High School that claimed the inaugural premiership for the division.

Kurtz said one of the aims of the trial was to attract the interest of schools that traditionally did not play rugby league.

"The schools we got involved were probably not traditional rugby league schools," he said.

"We probably see this as another avenue to try and make that a bit more enjoyable and safer for some kids to play rugby league."

Rugby league in western Sydney has been fending off a push into the area by AFL, with the fledgling Greater Western Sydney club aiming to draw more fans and players to the code.

Kurtz said while this played a part in the decision to run the trial, the weight and age decision was more about making the game "more accessible to all kids".

"Obviously with the AFL having a team in western Sydney there is so-called competition for kids," he said.

"But our main goal is to provide a good product for those kids to enjoy."

He said the weight and age competition would continue to be trialled at events across Sydney before a decision was made about its future in the code.
