Emerton expected to play England

Socceroo Brett Emerton is expected to sign with an English premier league club this weekend, his Dutch club Feyenoord said.

Feyenoord said talks were progressing rapidly with three clubs but Newcastle, which was targeting the Australian midfielder last month, had pulled out of the bidding.

"There is little likelihood of Emerton playing at De Kuip (Feyenoord's ground) come August," Feyenoord said in a statement.

"Feyenoord are currently in talks with three English clubs about a transfer, Newcastle United are not one of them.

"Emerton's potential new employers all know what he's asking for. The transfer may be done and dusted by the weekend."

Club spokesman Fred Blankemeijer would not reveal which clubs were chasing Emerton but said talks were at an advanced stage.

"There could be an announcement today, it could come on Saturday or even Sunday," he said.

"We should be able to give more news soon."

Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Blackburn and Manchester City are among the likely bidders.

Emerton, a hard-working midfielder who can also play at right wing-back, scored against England in Australia's 3-1 win at Upton Park in February and admitted the following month that he wanted to move to the Premiership.
