Hussey in a class of his own

Statistically, Mike Hussey is in rarefied air of which other mere mortal Test batsmen can only dream.

His top-shelf, measured 133 against Sri Lanka on Friday was his sixth century in 17 Tests, boosting his batting average to a breath-taking 82.38.

Only one man who has played as many or more Tests has averaged better.

Don Bradman's untouchable career mark of 99.94, with 6,996 runs in 52 Tests over two decades, is not that far away.

But it's the last thing entering the amiable and modest left-hander's head.

"It's of no importance at all really for me," Hussey said.

"Everyone else seems to talk about it.

"Averages and runs scored and hundreds scored and things like that is something that I will look back on when I have finished my career and sit back and reminisce about some of the great moments or great days and hopefully enjoy them with some of the guys really.

"But no I don't really want to look at it or concentrate on it at all."

Putting the number crunching from 1730 Test runs into perspective was the scare he endured when wife Amy gave birth to premature baby Molly in May.

Molly arrived 12 weeks early and the 32-year-old feared he might lose both the new-born and Amy as they spent several weeks in hospital after complications.

They were in the Gabba stands and it was an emotional Hussey who celebrated his ton after leg glancing for four after lunch during a record fourth-wicket stand with Michael Clarke.

The West Australian raised his bat to them and mouthed words of heart-felt thanks.

"It's a big effort for families to travel and be with us," he said.

"They are very special times. "I really appreciate the sacrifices they make for me to be able to live my dream."
