Two late reports took some of the gloss off a comfortable 34-point Hawthorn victory over Carlton in their AFL pre-season quarter-final at Telstra Dome.

The Hawks won 4.9.13 (103) to 4.3.15 (69), the win set up by a devastating first-quarter burst in which they booted seven goals.

They extended their lead to as much as 72 points early in the second term, before the Blues finally registered their first goal of the match 16 minutes into the quarter and gradually ground away at the Hawks' huge lead.

Carlton finished the first half with two super goals - to Simon Wiggins and Shaun Grigg - to reduce the half-time margin to 52 points.

With Nick Stevens and Marc Murphy showing plenty of class and Cameron Cloke taking charge in the ruck, the Blues then kicked four goals to one in the third quarter to cut the lead to 34 points at the last change.

While the Hawks held steady in the final term, they were given some concerns when hard-nosed defender Campbell Brown and youngster Josh Kennedy were both reported.

Brown was booked for crashing into Carlton's No.1 draft pick Matthew Kreuzer, after the youngster marked at half-forward, while Kennedy was cited for bumping Murphy head-on while the Blues' midfielder was bent over the ball.

Hawthorn can ill-afford any suspensions ahead of the home and away season, given they already have three important players - Shane Crawford, Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis - set to miss the early rounds because of suspensions earned in last year's finals series.

Earlier, the Hawks completely dominated the first quarter-and-a-half, with clearance specialist Sam Mitchell particularly good as his team took the ball out of the centre repeatedly to set up their barrage.

Luke Hodge, Grant Birchall, Lewis and Clinton Young were also instrumental in the early onslaught.

New recruit Cyril Rioli, the nephew of two former Norm Smith medallists Maurice Rioli and Michael Long, also showed some exciting glimpses early in the match, with stunning pace, strong tackling and some good skills.

The Hawks gave limited game-time to some of their stars in the second half, aiding Carlton's effort to work their way back into the match.
