Power goes out but Glory march on

Not even a power cut could stop Perth Glory on its seemingly inexorable march towards back-to-back NSL titles as Bobby Despotovksi's 99th goal for the club set up a 2-0 win over Wollongong Wolves.

On the night the reigning NSL champion officially opened its newly revamped $11.3 million Members Equity Stadium, a transformer failure halted proceedings for nearly half an hour with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

Five minutes after the restart, Despotovski's turn and shot illuminated what up until then had been a dull game and provided the springboard for Perth's seventh successive win at their spruced-up home.

Damian Mori continued his return to form with a third goal in two games to wrap up the win and send Glory eight points clear of closest rivals Parramatta Power.

Having conceded eleven goals in its last three starts, the Wolves' defensive form coming into their western test was in stark contrast to Perth.

The Glory backline, led by skipper Shaun Murphy, had been unhelpful in the extreme to opposing strikers, conceding only twice in its last three outings.

Mich d'Avray welcomed back Olyroo Jade North, with Jamie Coyne unlucky to be dropped after deputising for North.

Wollongong surprisingly left top scorer Chimaobi Nwaogazi on the bench despite his stellar first season at the top level securing him nine goals, five of those on the road.

After a bright start by the visitors, Perth midfielder Gary Faria saw a goalbound shot cleared off the line by Shane Lyons, before Wollongong keeper Andrew Crews conjured up a point blank save to deny Mark Byrnes' bullet header.

With Western Australian premier Geoff Gallop looking on, the game was evenly balanced when the lights in all corners of the ground abruptly went out.
