Optimistic Wiki wants to play in finals

Canberra enforcer Ruben Wiki refuses to concede defeat in his quest to play again in the NRL this season.

Wiki limped off Canberra Stadium on Saturday night, a disconsolate figure despite the Raiders wrapping up the final spot in the top eight with a 62-22 win over South Sydney.

The 31-year-old underwent x-rays which cleared him of a break but has been diagnosed with ankle syndesmosis, otherwise known as a high ankle sprain.

The injury has claimed plenty of scalps this season - sidelining Roosters pair Craig Wing and Shannon Hegarty for significant periods - and it's expected Wiki will be out for a minimum of four weeks.

However, the New Zealand international is intent on playing this weekend and told teammates and officials he hadn't given up hope of taking his spot against the Sydney Roosters in their qualifying final at Aussie Stadium on Sunday.

"I'm a good healer," said Wiki, who should be fit for the Test against Australia on October 16 in Auckland.

The Raiders have lost both their games against the Roosters this season and they may have to confront the minor premier without their captain Simon Woolford, who was placed on report for a high tackle.

Bearing that in mind the Raiders would be desperate to have Wiki, who will join the New Zealand Warriors next season, on deck.

"There's a small ray of light there," Canberra coach Matthew Elliott said of Wiki.

"He's doing everything he possibly can. This week would be very, very unlikely. I would say that he would be doubtful."
