Lions humiliate Magpies at Gabba

Brisbane's mid-season premiership charge went into overdrive as the Lions romped to their biggest ever win over Collingwood in front of a record crowd at the Gabba.

Three-time premiership winning defender Chris Johnson led the onslaught with an almost perfect display of football during the game's first half bloodbath.

Johnson finished with 15 marks to go with 22 possessions as Brisbane held the Magpies goalless before the break.

It was the first time the powerful Victorian club had not kicked a major in the first half since 1981.

The end result - a 19.19 (133) to 7.13 (55) annihilation - flattered Collingwood who were hampered by a series of costly misses in front of goal.

Ex-Lion Blake Caracella was the biggest culprit for the visitors, missing a simple set shot from a free kick early before being embarrassed by Brisbane's defence when he was run down with an open goal square beckoning.

Caracella wasn't alone however, as dynamic Lions Luke Power (32 possessions), Jason Akermanis and Jonathan Brown joined Johnson in running riot in front of 37,224 fans.

Their efforts ensured the 78-point thrashing entered the record books as Collingwood's biggest losing margin against Brisbane.

Ever-improving Lions forward Daniel Merrett and goalsneak Ash McGrath both kicked three goals with Magpies skipper Nathan Buckley adding two for the Pies.

Only a minor dose of the kicking yips stopped Brisbane from wrapping the game up as early as the opening quarter so dominant was their performance.
