Cricket medal named after Steve Waugh

Most sportsmen don't have awards named after them until they've ended their careers.

But Australia's Test captain remained non-committal about his future after NSW Cricket announced its player of the year award would be called the Steve Waugh Medal.

As the deadline approaches for Waugh to say whether he'll retire or make himself available to join Australia's tour of the West Indies next month, he again fended off questions about when he will decide.

"I'm not sure when I'll make that decision but I've got to think about it because the team's going to be picked for the West Indies," Waugh said.

With the team for the West Indies due to be named in a fortnight, Waugh will have to advise selectors of his availability in the next week or so.

If he does put his hand up, it would be near impossible to leave him out after a century in his last Test against England in January and some blistering form with the bat for his state since.

Waugh revealed he'd lost none of the competitive instinct for which he is so famous.

"I still love competing now," Waugh said.

"Getting out in the middle and doing battle one-on-one with someone else was what I was meant to do I think.

"I love a challenge. I love the competition of trying to beat the opposite number."
