Gold Coast coach John Cartwright believes Preston Campbell is in career-best form after the Titans re-signed the electrifying fullback until the end of 2009.

Campbell, 30, has been in blistering form in recent weeks as the Titans have charged to the top of the NRL ladder after seven rounds.

"He's coming into some of the best form that he's played in his career," Cartwright said.

"His game last week against the Warriors, you couldn't really hope for a better game from a fullback.

"He is also so important to the club. He's the type of guy you want as a role model for everyone that plays at the club."

Campbell, who made his first grade debut with the Gold Coast Chargers in 1998, admitted he had also started to think about life after football after being hampered by injuries over the past three years.

The 2001 Dally M Medallist will have a battle on his hands to retain the custodian role next year after Canberra fullback William Zillman, 21, recently penned a four-year deal with the Titans.

"I'm feeling good at the moment and feel like I could play for another five years but you just don't know what's going to happen," said Campbell, who has previously played for Cronulla and Penrith.

"We've got a lot of young blokes coming through and I just don't want to stand in the way of the club going forward.

"It's obvious that the club is going to be blooding some of the younger blokes maybe later on this year or definitely next year so it'll be interesting to see what role I play.

"But whatever role comes up, I'll definitely be doing my best.

"It's just good to know what I'm doing next year.

"I'm at that stage of my career where I have to start thinking about life after football but that's not to say I won't be playing for a few years after that."
