AFL ladder-leaders Hawthorn are backing their superstar forward Lance Franklin over allegations he threw a drink over two women at a nightclub.

Franklin was escorted from the CQ Bar in central Melbourne on Saturday night, hours after the Hawks had lost their first match of the season to the Western Bulldogs in Launceston.

Two women claimed they had been verbally abused by Franklin and had a drink thrown at them.

Hawks chief executive Ian Robson said he was satisfied with Franklin's version of events, having spoken to the league's leading goalkicker and several other players present at the nightclub.

"After becoming aware of these additional allegations overnight I have spoken at length with Lance and a number of the other Hawthorn players and impartial witnesses who were in attendance on the night," said Robson.

"I am satisfied that there is no substance to the allegation relating to the throwing of a drink over patrons at the club and as to the allegation of the language that may have been used, Lance is unable to specifically recall what was said, however, denies it was of a sexual nature.

"In the absence of further information being brought forward the club now sees the matter as closed."

Robson said Hawthorn were also aware of video footage purporting to be of another incident involving Hawthorn players in 2006.

"Whilst the incident occurred some time ago the club will investigate this separately and should it be determined the players whose likeness it appears to be, the club will counsel them as to appropriate social behaviour," the Hawks said in a statement.

Hawthorn lead the AFL ladder after 10 rounds while Franklin sits atop the goalkicking table with 50, seven clear of Brisbane's Daniel Bradshaw.
