Canterbury chief executive Todd Greenberg claims the idea of the Bulldogs playing at Belmore is from a bygone era with the club adamant its playing future is at ANZ Stadium.

The Bulldogs on Friday announced they would move their training and administration base back to a redeveloped Belmore Sports Ground in time for next season, having left the club's spiritual home in 2008 to take up residence in Sydney's Olympic precinct.

But any notion of the club playing NRL matches at the suburban venue appear dashed, with Greenberg claiming the club had outgrown Belmore, even with a major upgrade of facilities.

"This time in two years our membership numbers hopefully will be in excess of the capacity of Belmore, so it's not something we're looking at down the track," Greenberg said of playing matches at Belmore.

"Maybe an NRL trial match in years to come if we were to get additional funding, but not (NRL games) as part of these plans.

"At the moment we're certainly focused on playing junior rugby league games, maybe our NSW Cup and our Flegg sides there, but not NRL matches."

The Bulldogs have only been able to make the move back to Belmore thanks to a $4.9 million grant after three years lobbying by Canterbury officials keen to upgrade the dilapidated site.

Work is expected to commence on stage one in the coming months, with a world-class gym to be built containing an altitude chamber and recovery centre.

Stage two, which requires further funding, would see the ground and amenities upgraded to the point where it could host junior representative rugby league and NSW Cup games.
