AFL umpire Wenn apologises to Connors

Umpire Stuart Wenn has apologised to Daniel Connors for making an inappropriate comment to the Richmond defender during Saturday's AFL clash with St Kilda.

Wenn intervened when Connors was involved in a physical altercation with his St Kilda opponent Andrew McQualter, telling the Tiger "you're batting way out of your league".

The comments were picked up by the umpire's microphone.

"My comments to Daniel and my body language were not in line with how I normally communicate and manage players," Wenn said in a statement.

"I pride myself on remaining calm and composed, even when involved in the most heated on-field situations.

"I have spoken to Daniel and I acknowledged that I should have handled the situation more appropriately.

"On-field relationships between players and umpires have improved dramatically in recent seasons, and I regret what occurred on Saturday."

Umpires boss Jeff Gieschen said the incident was "totally out of character" for Wenn, who will learn on Thursday whether he has retained his place on the senior panel for the final round of the home and away season.
