Kemp to play for Sydney rugby club

Brisbane Broncos winger Denan Kemp could launch his rugby union career with Sydney-based club Southern Districts after signing a short-term ARU contract this week.

After a day of confusion, ARU officials late on Thursday finally confirmed the 23-year-old flyer - left shattered last week after missing out on a Super 15 contract with the Melbourne Rebels - had signed a letter of intent for 2011.

News on Thursday that the Rebels had recruited highly-regarded Wallaby Kurtley Beale helped shed light on why the Super 15 newcomers pulled the deal without giving any real explanation.

"I've signed a letter of intent with the ARU," Kemp told AAP on Thursday.

"I'll be heading to Sydney on Sunday to join the Australian Sevens squad and have further talks with Super 15 clubs about next season."

Kemp was encouraged to pursue a career in rugby after speaking with current Wallaby winger Drew Mitchell.

Mitchell had followed Kemp's NRL exploits and felt he would be able to make a successful switch.

The ARU have invited 20 players, with Kemp the only non-rugby player, to trial for a place in the 12-man sevens squad to contest the final two rounds of the IRB World Series in London and Edinburgh in late May.

"It's pretty exciting," said Kemp, a promising junior soccer player blessed with blistering pace and a good kicking game.

"It would be pretty awesome if I could put on an Australian jersey."

Kemp will have to trial for a place in the sevens squad but coach and former dual international Michael O'Connor said he was "well and truly in the mix".

"Denan made the approach. He's keen to play rugby as he's not going anywhere in league," said O'Connor.

"We're happy to have a look at him.

"He's obviously got a lot to learn but he's a skilful player.

"I think it would be a good way to introduce him into rugby with the rules of the game.

"I certainly wouldn't rule out picking him for the last two tournaments."
