Mortlock out of Rebels match

Melbourne Rebels have suffered a blow ahead of Friday night's Super Rugby match against the Highlanders with captain Stirling Mortlock ruled out of the fixture.

Mortlock suffered a hip strain at training this week and has been ruled out for the round nine clash at AAMI Park.

Jimmy Hilgendorf will come into the side as a straight swap for Mortlock at inside centre.

Rebels coach Rod Macqueen admitted it was not an ideal situation but was confident that Hilgendorf could cover for Mortlock.

"It is really disappointing because for the first time this season we thought we were going into a game with a near full-strength side," Macqueen said.

"At the same time though, I am relieved to have Jimmy Hilgendorf return from injury and I am confident that he will take his opportunity."
