Judd closer to triple Brownlow glory

Only four men have won three Brownlow Medals.

On the evidence of another Chris Judd masterclass in Carlton's 76-point win over Melbourne, make way for a fifth member of that exclusive club next month.

Judd will surely pocket another three votes from the umpires for his gamebreaking 31-possession haul in the Blues' 21.8 (134) to 7.16 (58) triumph at the MCG on Saturday.

If he can join Haydn Bunton, Dick Reynolds, Bob Skilton and Ian Stewart as a three-time Brownlow winner when the AFL's best and fairest is named in September, it will cap off an amazing year - made more special by becoming a father for the first time a fortnight ago.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten joked the sleepless nights of parenthood might have even further improved Judd's game.

But when the 27-year-old determines he will grab a game by the scruff of the neck - as he did in the second quarter of the victory over the Demons - nothing and no one are capable of stopping him.

His clean hands extracting the ball from clearances, his ability to burst through packs at will, and sheer efficiency in every part of his game, leave him few peers in the modern game and perhaps few ever.

His second quarter was superb with 12 disposals at 100 per cent efficiency, four clearances, two goals and five scoring involvements in the Blues' eight goals for the term. It was the platform for the Blues to destroy the Demons.

"We say this every four weeks or so - we've never seen a quarter like that or a game like that," Ratten said of Judd.

"He's an amazing player with his ability to win one-on-ones in tight situations. But I was really pleased for him he was able to finish his work with a couple of goals today.

"He's super-competitive and personally he's had to adjust with the baby and his sleeping patterns and everything's changed for him in the last two weeks.

"His games for us have been outstanding all season and he just followed that form."
