Fallon named Aussie captain

Triple Olympian Trisha Fallon was named captain of the 2005 Australian women's basketball squad.

The 30-strong group includes WNBA stars Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor and WNBL rookie of the year Renae Camino.

Recently re-appointed head coach Jan Stirling plans to take a squad to China for an international tournament ahead of the Oceania ranking series against New Zealand in September.

The events will form part of the Opals' build-up for next year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

"We're excited about the coming 12 months. Our big hurdle this year will be getting over the rapidly improving New Zealand team who have blossomed under the guidance of Tom Maher," Stirling said.

With many players either already signed-up or trying their luck at WNBA training camps over the coming months, Stirling will be working without a full squad for the majority of the year.

"It will be a challenge to get the full squad together this year, but that is the nature of playing an international sport and something we have accounted for in our planning," Stirling said.

Squad: Deanne Butler, Jessica Bibby, Kristi Harrower, Renae Camino, Jae Kingi, Kathleen Macleod, Erin Phillips, Michelle Musselwhite, Alicia Poto, Jenni Screen, Samantha Richards, Jessica Foley, Belinda Snell, Kristen Veal, Allison Tranquilli, Carly Wilson, Carla Boyd, Suzy Batkovic, Trisha Fallon (capt), Hollie Grima, Shelley Hammonds, Jacinta Hamilton, Katrina Hibbert, Lauren Jackson, Emily McInerny, Natalie Porter, Laura Summerton, Gabrielle Richards, Penny Taylor, Jenny Whittle.
