Sydney FC through to qualifying final

New Caledonia's AS Magenta looms as the only remaining obstacle between Sydney FC and a place in December's lucrative FIFA soccer World Club Championship.

The Australian team's 6-0 semi-final flogging of Vanuatu's Tafea FC in the Oceania Football Confederation club championship semi-final in Tahiti preceded AS Magenta's 4-1 triumph over hosts AS Pirae in the other semi-final.

Sydney FC scored three goals in each half as it recorded its fourth straight victory in the eight-team tournament.

"Scoring three goals in the first half was perfect for us, because it allowed us to conserve some power for the final," Sydney FC coach Pierre Littbarski said.

"Tafea were a better team than the teams we played in the other matches, but we played better and the players stepped up a level.

"Now we have to step up another level in the final. We have not won anything yet."

AS Magenta deserved its place in the final, which will be held on Saturday afternoon Australian time, by coming back from 1-0 down against Tahiti's AS Pirae.

It took Sydney FC 25 minutes to prise open a defensive-minded Tafea side, which employed just one forward.

Sydney finally breached the opposing defence in the 25th minute through a Saso Petrovski volley.

The Australian side took control with two more goals just before the break.
