Brosque helps Roar to beat Sydney 2-1

Two-goal hero Alex Brosque upgraded Queensland's A-League season from clinically dead to surviving on life support with a scintillating display in the Roar's 2-1 win over Sydney FC at Suncorp Stadium.

Brosque kept the door slightly ajar for a shock finals charge from the Roar with two goals in the space of 10 minutes against the team he is rumoured to be joining next season.

It was the Roar's first home win since the opening round when they beat New Zealand 2-0.

The win moved Queensland to within four points of fourth-placed Newcastle - its opponents in the next round - with two games remaining in the season.

The Jets, however, could once and for all crush the Roar's last-ditch hopes of a finals berth if they beat Melbourne at home.

For now, the Roar will be basking in the glory that originated from Brosque's magical boots with goals coming in the 61st and 70th minutes, much to the delight of the 13,302 fans.

Brosque's opening goal sprung from a terrific challenge by Queensland midfielder Massimo Murdocca on Sydney defender Iain Fyfe.

A sliding Murdocca managed to deflect the ball from Fyfe's feet and towards Brosque who calmly slotted it past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Clint Bolton.

His second came on the back of a deft pass by Jonti Richter from the edge of the penalty box and left Bolton with little chance of saving it.

Sydney striker Sasho Petrovski, who came on as a substitute with Steve Corica in the 62nd minute, scored a late consolation goal for the visitors but it was not enough to steer them towards a draw.

They will stay in second place on the table but coach Pierre Littbarski must be concerned by the way his team has failed to dominate rivals since the Club World Championships last month.

Queensland coach Miron Bleiberg waited until the 66th minute to introduce teenage sensation David Williams to the professional ranks.

Williams struggled to have much input but almost scored a late goal with only a desperate effort by Bolton blocking his path.
