Wildcats ruin Breakers 100th NBL match

The unbeaten Perth Wildcats ruthlessly muted the New Zealand Breakers' celebration of their 100th career game by creating their own slice of NBL history with a comfortable 105-88 victory.

On the back of a dominant third quarter, Perth advanced to 5-0, the best start to a season since they joined the league in 1982.

The Wildcats coasted home after outscoring the Breakers 37-24 in the penultimate term at Trusts Stadium to pave the way for their sixth straight win over the Auckland-based franchise.

Centre Shawn Redhage recovered from an uncharacteristically sluggish start - and an injury break for a bleeding nose - to put the round four contest beyond reach with a game high haul of 24 points.

Although Redhage only had seven points in the bank at halftime, the Wildcats still had a 44-40 buffer through the combined efforts of captain Paul Rogers and Australian international Tony Ronaldson.

Redhage then stepped up twice going coast to coast as the Breakers suffered a third quarter meltdown for the second successive match.

The Breakers strung together a 6-0 run early in the final period but Perth were not about to let their advantage slip and comfortably covered any sniff of a Breakers' resurgence.

An unprecedented fifth straight win enabled the Wildcats to make the perfect start to their four-game road trip which also includes visits to Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns over the next nine days.

Perth captain Paul Rogers was delighted to help guide his team to a ground breaking win.

"The team's clicking really nicely, everyone is playing really unselfishly," he said before lauding the third quarter effort.

"It's the championship quarter. You have to win that one to set the tone for the rest of the game and we're happy we were able to do that."

Breakers' forward Ben Pepper was left to rue another costly drop off after halftime.

"For whatever reason we were flat in the third quarter and they got away from us. We just didn't grind it out in the second half," said Pepper, who, like Redhage, hauled in a game high nine rebounds.

The Breakers initially did a good job curbing Redhage, who averaged 26.3 points a game, although his accidental collision with Tim Behrendorff aided their cause.

Redhage, scorer of 37 points against the Townsville last week, needed a four-minute break with an ice-pack on his bleeding nose after a stray arm caught the forward when Behrendorff fell over him with seven minutes left in the second quarter.

Ben Pepper was the Breakers most effective weapon before the main break, muscling his way through traffic for eight points while he was active under the hoop at either end hauling in seven rebounds.

American imports Carlos Powell and Brian Wethers made an impression in the second spell and contributed 20 and 16 respectively - although the game was already lost.

While the Wildcats continue their road trip in a buoyant frame of mind, the Breakers (1-2) face a difficult week ahead starting with a doubleheader against the West Sydney Razorbacks (Saturday), and the Wollongong Hawks (Monday) before returning home for a Wednesday night appointment against the Brisbane Bullets.
