Kiwis put another nail into Poms' coffin

Despite putting another nail into the coffin of England's disastrous Australian tour, New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming expressed disappointment at not taking a bonus point as well as a 58-run victory from the one day international in Perth.

After posting 7-318, its highest ever total against the English in limited overs internationals, the Kiwis restricted England to 8-260, and virtually guaranteed themselves a place in the tri-series final.

Lou Vincent, Ross Taylor and the ballistic Jacob Oram were the main recipients of England's wayward bowlers, who conceded 22 wides, three no balls, and plenty to hit.

And despite Ed Joyce adding some steel to the English top order with a career-best 66 on his promotion to opener, the rest succumbed in typically soft fashion to add another grim chapter to an already woeful summer.

With England now needing to win their next two games - having won one on the entire tour - their run rate is also massively inferior to both their opponents.

In stark contrast, New Zealand's performance again showed they could be one of Australia's main challengers at the World Cup - although several late fielding lapses left Fleming feeling flat.

"We were extremely disappointed not to get the bonus point, from a fielding standards point of view we shelled a couple and got a little bit desperate to do it," Fleming said.

"It would have been nice to win the game emphatically and get another point from it, so it is bitter sweet.

"We are happy to win the game, but the bonus point probably would have been reflective of how well we fielded in the first 40 overs."

England's expensive bowling and comical fielding allowed the Black Caps to make the most of another cracking WACA pitch, which has produced more than 1,200 runs in two internationals.

Vincent, only playing after Nathan Astle abruptly pulled up the stumps on his career last week, scored his second international fifty in three days to set his side on its way.

His 111-ball 76 continued a magic run in Perth, which has now produced one hundred and three fifties in one Test and three one-dayers.

Alongside Taylor, who continued his rapid rise with a well-paced 71, the pair put on 137 in 148 balls for the third-wicket before Oram's late ballistics.

Still smarting from being labelled a poor man's Chris Cairns, Oram smashed 22 off the penultimate over, and 35 off his last ten balls faced, to reach 54 not out to take his tally to 241 runs in three innings.

England skipper Andrew Flintoff said Oram's late burst had taken the game away from England.

"New Zealand started well ... and then Jacob Oram came in continued that form he is in, and scored 50 of four overs or so and took the game away from us," Flintoff said.

Prior to the match, Flintoff had stated his team's simple task was to score more runs - although it is unlikely he meant for the opposition.

Only Monty Panesar (2-35) had any control, with his first six over spell going for just 15 runs, including two maidens and prodigious turn.

Other than the effervescent spinner, the English attack were incapable of finding any consistency, other than the regular sundries, which totalled 37.

Interspersed between the all-to-rare highlights were moments which summed up a disastrous tour, including Ian Bell's dropping of Vincent on 33 and Chris Tremlett's laughable attempts at boundary fielding.

A tinker to the English batting line-up, shunted the out-of-form Andrew Strauss to four, allowing Joyce to make his first fifty in international cricket.

He was given a life on 58 when caught by Oram of a Jeetan Patel no-ball, during which effort the all-rounder injured his rib, forcing him off the field for ten overs.

But the gulf in the fielding when it mattered was no better illustrated by Vincent, whose full length dive to run out Joyce removed England's anchor.

After that, it drifted to yet another dismal defeat, despite Paul Nixon's late cameo of 49.
