The Kookaburras opened their challenge series campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over an undermanned Pakistan at Perth Hockey Stadium.

The Australian men's hockey team gained the initiative early on and looked sharp in patches considering it was the side's first international outing in three months.

Striker Troy Elder almost scored in the first minute and the tourists were on the back foot for the majority of the encounter.

Elder created havoc early on while the pace of Jamie Dwyer, the world's best junior player last year, caused trouble with his dashing runs.

The combination helped set up a penalty shot in the 14th minute which Brent Livermore converted after sending Pakistan goalkeeper Ahmad Alam the wrong way.

It was 2-0 in the 29th minute when Elder smashed home from a penalty corner and then taunted the visitors with a verbal jibe.

Nathan Eglington secured the result in the 61st minute with a diving goal from a goal mouth scramble after a penalty corner.

Dwyer somehow failed to get on the scoresheet two minutes later by blazing over the bar form pointblank range with an empty net beckoning.

Pakistan were missing several stars, including captain Mohammad Nadeem and midfielder Wasim Ahmed, who were dropped for disciplinary reasons.

The four team series is a lead up event for August's championship trophy in The Netherlands and next year's Olympics in Athens.
