Wolfman expects to lose Cup Test spot

Winger David Williams believes his stunning three-try Test debut against PNG is unlikely to count for much when coach Ricky Stuart picks Australia's squad for its World Cup finals campaign.

The 22 year-old Manly flyer reckons he'll be lucky to hold his place ahead of the more established wingers in Stuart's 25-man squad.

"I'd love to keep the spot, but whatever happens, happens," said the beaming winger.

"I certainly won't be kicking myself if I don't get a spot for next week or the week after, that's for sure.

"There are better players in front of me and that's fair enough."

Williams was handed his Test debut after Stuart opted to rest a number of his strike players.

And he certainly made the best of the opportunity, proving he's a classy finisher with genuine speed who could be a permanent fixture on the wing.

Terry Campese, who suffered an eye injury in Sunday's Test, Israel Folau, Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Brent Tate can all play on the wing.

Even so, Williams should not dismiss his chances of getting another Test jumper soon, with Stuart to review the performances of Sunday night's four debutants before naming the semi-final squad in Sydney later this week.

"I'll talk to Darren (Lockyer) and Cameron (Smith) and Alfie (Allan Langer) and Carty (John Cartwright) about the team going forward," said Stuart.

Williams, who has had an outstanding debut season in first grade, culminating in the NRL premiership, described his first Test as "just awesome".

"I can't really describe it at the moment," he said in the Kangaroos' dressing room immediately after the 46-6 win.

"I'll probably look back more after I finish playing than I will now, but you certainly don't come into these games expecting to do anything like that.

"You just want to do your job and hopefully not screw up and hopefully I did that."

Williams could easily have bagged five tries on debut after being called back off a Johnathan Thurston forward pass that looked marginal at best and he was also dragged down a few metres short after a scything 60-metre run through several PNG defenders.

Nevertheless, Stuart and stand-in captain Cameron Smith spoke highly of PNG's plucky performance and praised coach Adrian Lam for the way the team was prepared.

"They can really hold their heads high in regards to how they've played this tournament," said Stuart who said Australia had great respect for the Kumuls.
