Benji banks on Wests Tigers big men

It was lauded as Benji Marshall's greatest performance but the star Wests Tigers halfback says it won't be repeated unless his forwards keep rising to the challenge.

Marshall received all the plaudits after engineering a come-from-behind 40-24 NRL win over the Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night but the Kiwi champion wanted all the focus to be on his forward pack.

Heaping praise on prop Keith Galloway and the rest of his front men, Marshall said the only way he could continue playing his role as a dominant halfback was if the forwards kept up their end of the bargain.

"Our forward pack has been criticised at times for being too small but I thought they stood up," said Marshall.

"Our forwards laid a good platform. If they didn't do that I wouldn't have been able to do what I did... they gave me a bit of space and a bit of time and that's all we need.

"Trying to play off a slow play-the-ball is harder than playing off a fast one.

"Last week they probably didn't do their job. But big Keith stood up tonight and a few of the other forwards and you have to rap them when they do.

"Next week they need to do the same thing or I'll be up them again."

While the Tigers were happy with their strong win - taking them to two wins from three games in 12 days to start the season - their focus was immediately on next Saturday's away game at Penrith.

The Tigers have not strung together more than two wins in a row since early 2007 and with looming clashes with Manly (away), Melbourne (home), Newcastle (home) and the Bulldogs (away) also in the next month, they know they cannot be satisfied with their current form.

"There is no point playing like that then putting in a poor performance next week," said captain Robbie Farah.

"What we did after round one, (losing 42-14 to North Queensland) we were pretty disappointed with how we played up in Townsville and tonight is a good win but we need three or four good back-to-back performances then I will talk the team up."

Coach Tim Sheens said he remained concerned about his side's defence, particularly after conceding a few "soft" tries against the Roosters.

"Our right edge (defence) was all over the place. Our edges seem to take turns," he said.

"(But) to their credit they held together and didn't fall apart.

"No one lost that focus of we can still win this game."
