Fien on the lookout for new NRL home

Warriors halfback Nathan Fien will sit down with his manager this week to make plans to secure the World Cup-winner a new home for 2010.

Warriors management are expected to open contract talks with Fien this month, but he looks unlikely to score a much-wanted new deal with the New Zealand club.

The experienced player recently knocked back a three-year deal with an English club and is yet to receive solid offers from other NRL clubs.

However, Parramatta and St George Illawarra are reportedly both interested.

"My manager is actually coming over today to talk about what he's been discussing with other clubs, then we can go from there," Fien told AAP on Thursday.

Fien's sparkling World Cup performance helped nab the title for the Kiwis, but he has had an unsettling 2009 in the shadow of legendary halfback Stacey Jones, who has returned to the Warriors on a one-year deal.

Fien has had to be content with an interchange role for much of the season to date, but is now getting the chance to make his mark at five-eighth.

"I'm just looking forward to the challenge of playing back in the halves again," he said.

"Hopefully I can grab the opportunity with both hands and hold that position for the rest of the year."

Fien, who has a young family, has made no secret of wanting to stay in Auckland.

"I love the Warriors, I love running out onto Mt Smart Stadium, I love the boys," he said.

"That said, I haven't received an offer from the Warriors so we can't be saying we'd love to stay if there's nothing here for us."

Either way, he's hopeful the key role will help prove his worth to the Warriors bosses.

Fien recently rejected a three-year deal at Huddersfield due to concerns over tax changes brought in because of the recession.

Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah has said the club was always going to open discussions with Fien in mid-May, once player numbers had been assessed.

"It's not dealt with either way, we thought he was likely to sign elsewhere," Scurrah said late last month.
