Last-gasp win a career high for Champion

South Sydney centre Beau Champion says Sunday's dramatic 23-22 last-gasp NRL victory over Wests Tigers at the Sydney Cricket Ground was the highlight of his career.

Champion, who grabbed the decisive try five minutes from time to help level the scores before winger Nathan Merritt's field goal sealed a stunning victory in the dying seconds of the match, said the atmosphere at the SCG made the win extra special.

"I have been here a few years now and that was the best feeling," Champion told AAP.

"That would have to be the best moment of my career, not the game in general as we did it the hard way and didn't play as well as we can, but definitely the finish.

"I haven't played any rep football and to see that crowd out there absolutely going off after that field goal.

"It's why you play the game, they are the moments that bring out the best in you, it was really enjoyable."

A crowd of almost 30,000 generated a tremendous atmosphere at the SCG as both sides played their part in an absorbing encounter.

"The crowd was awesome, you just looked out and it was packed and most of them were Souths supporters and for us to finish like that, just couldn't get any better," Champion said.

The 22-year-old has been one of the quiet achievers for Souths this season with four tries in nine games and admitted his vital try on Sunday made up for one of his quieter games of the campaign.

"I was disappointed with how I played up to that point .. I had not seen much of the ball, I pulled off a couple of tackles, but I knew when I got the opportunity I needed to do my best and fortunately it ended in a try," he said.

He also believes the victory could be a turning point in the development for a young Souths team.

"We come into the game with four wins and four losses and this win keeps us in the eight and if we can go on a run here then who knows where we can go," he said.

"We have a lot of areas to improve on and we know we didn't play well but when you do that and win it is the sign of a good side."
