Fan attack on ref may bite Wests Tigers

Wests Tigers officials have backed calls for a life ban for the fan who attacked referee Jared Maxwell at Campbelltown Stadium on Friday night, but the club too could find itself in hot water over security at the ground.

Maxwell was tackled from behind just moments after blowing fulltime in Brisbane's 20-18 win over the Tigers, the assailant promptly apprehended by police.

The 25-year-old man was charged with common assault and entering a playing field without authority, and was given conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on June 17.

Acting Wests Tigers chief Andy Timbs expressed his total dismay at the attack, but the club could also face sanctions with claims from onlookers after the match that the fan had entered the field approximately 20 seconds before fulltime before retreating once he realised play had not yet ceased.

He then allegedly waited on the sideline until after fulltime before running on and tackling the referee.

"In the calm light of day we'll talk to the club about security in general after their security debrief," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said after the game.

"Whenever a fan gets on the field, that's a worry."

Annesley indicated the fan would face a life ban from all NRL matches, a stance supported by Timbs.

"The Wests Tigers consider the conduct of the offender to be disgraceful and unacceptable and we will take every measure to ensure that individual is no longer a part of the Wests Tigers fraternity," Timbs said in a statement.

"The Wests Tigers will support any investigation into the matter by police and/or the NRL and will also support any action of the results from that investigation.

"We will support the NRL in banning this individual for life."

While shocked over the incident, Maxwell said he was uninjured, with fellow referee Ben Cummins quickly coming to his aid.

Maxwell did however call for the strongest possible sanction against the man in question, with the refereeing ranks already struggling to attract numbers.

"That's (a life ban) the bare minimum I guess, but the NRL will make that decision," Maxwell said.

"We're struggling for referees to come into the game so I hope the authorities take the appropriate action."
