Souths' intensity needs to lift: Wesser

Rhys Wesser has put his hand up and admitted his crucial blunder in South Sydney's NRL loss to Parramatta on Sunday, but the Rabbitohs are adamant they can handle the big pressure matches.

Souths were slammed by commentators for letting slip a half-time lead when a fired-up Eels side turned up the heat in the second half in Nathan Hindmarsh's record-breaking game.

Wesser's casual attempt to clean up a Daniel Mortimer kick, which led to a Luke Burt try, gave the Eels the lead for the first time in the match.

"It's just one mistake, a mistake that I made and a big error that I'd like to pretty much put behind me and move on from," Wesser told AAP on Monday.

"I thought it was going to go out and I didn't know Luke Burt was chasing so hard and he got me in the corner of my eye and by then it was too late.

"It's pretty much my error and his good work.

"I'm sure it will come up during the week and I'll put my hand up and say, 'yeah I made a mistake there'."

The Rabbitohs' handling was woeful as they wilted in front of a vocal 25,000-strong crowd, but Wesser said he was confident his side could match the mental steel of the competition's front-runners.

"You look at the good sides, the Melbourne Storms and the Manlys, they go out week-in week-out and produce effort after effort," the veteran fullback said.

"If you want to compete with the best sides in the competition you have to produce week-in week-out and that's something that we're still learning to do and we're pretty confident that we can come up with it."

Giant forward Dave Taylor denied the big atmosphere had contributed to Souths surrendering their 8-2 lead at the break.

"I don't think the pressure got to us," he said.

"Our handling let us down, I don't think it was any pressure, it was just mistake after mistake after mistake."

But Taylor knows the Rabbitohs need to put to bed the suspicion they have the occasional shocker in their repertoire.

"We don't want to be like the old Souths where they were hot one week and not the next, we want to be consistent in our games," he said.

"That's what last night's game was about, teaching us a lesson, being able to walk away knowing the standard of footy we need to play every week."
